The department was established in 2023 under the name “Genetics and Biotechnology”, on the basis of the chairs “Zoology and Biochemistry” and “Ecology and Botany”. The department trains personnel in the direction of “Biology”, and mainly trains Doctors of Philosophy (PhD) and Masters in the specialties of “Genetics”, “Biotechnology”, “Plant Physiology”, “Biophysics”.
Currently, the department employs 20 professors and teachers, including 2 professors, 1 doctor of science, 6 associate professors and 10 senior teachers.
In recent years there has been a growth of scientific potential of the department. G.A. Dusmatova, Y.B. Tursunov, G.Sh. Gulomovs received the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy and the scientific rank of associate professor. At present, the scientific potential of the department is 43%, the average age is 38 years, the average age of professors and teachers with scientific potential is - 46 years.
The department has a prospective plan for the training of scientific and pedagogical staff to improve the scientific potential of the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology in 2023-2025. In 2025, it is planned to defend doctoral dissertations of two PhD research fellows and teachers.
Since 2023 the department has a postgraduate doctoral programme in the speciality 03.00.12 - Biotechnology.
From 2024-2025 academic year the admission of students to the educational direction of Bachelor's degree 60710200-Biotechnology and Master's degree in speciality 70710201-Biotechnology is carried out.

At present, professors and teachers of the department have published a number of textbooks, teaching aids, methodical manuals and monographs, enriching the scientific, technical and methodical base of the information and resource centre of the university and the library of the department created on its basis.
For the convenience of graduate and undergraduate students, the “Departmental Library” and “Electronic Library” have been created, enriched with more than 100 titles of scientific literature and more than 300 textbooks and manuals.
Most of the teachers - candidates of sciences working in the department - are specialists engaged in scientific research in the field of genetics and biotechnology.
The department has 6 teaching laboratories, 2 of them are research laboratories. The teaching laboratory equipment is modern and imported from the USA, Russia, Germany and China in 2015-2023. The training laboratory equipment is supplemented with autoclave, thermostat, desiccator, spectrophotometer, polarograph, distillers, laminar boxes, microcentrifuge, vacuum centrifuge, homogeniser, microtome, microscopes, magnifying glasses and dissecting instruments for laboratory classes.
In the 2024-2025 academic year, the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology teaches about 30 subjects. Training is conducted in full-time and part-time departments, second specialties in biology, biotechnology and master's degree programs in biotechnology, biology and biophysics and biochemistry.
The Department of Genetics and Biotechnology actively runs the “Young Geneticist” and “Biotechnologist” clubs with the aim of expanding research work with gifted students. About 100 members of the circles are given laboratory and practical classes by the department's teachers, including the “Yosh Genetik” circle, where classes are given on the following topics: “Hybridization of introgressive forms with polyploid species and inheritance of economically valuable traits in their offspring”, “Analysis of genetic diseases and their causes (using the Andijan region as an example)”, “Inheritance of anthocyanin coloration and chlorophyll content in G. hirsutum L. cotton and their relationship”, “Study of patterns of heredity, variability and dependence of morphoeconomic traits in hybrids of medium- and long-fiber varieties of cotton”, “Use of different genomic types in enriching the genotypes of cotton varieties”. In the “Biotechnologist” circle, with the involvement of first-year students, ideas about biotechnology and preparation for further classes are given, classes are conducted on the topics of “Determination of the antibacterial activity of secondary plant metabolites”, “Study of the effect of secondary plant metabolites on enzyme inhibition” and a number of other areas.
There are about 843 students studying in the Biology department. Currently, 220 gifted students from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years are assigned to the professors and teachers of the department. They actively participate in foreign and domestic scientific conferences with their articles and theses.
Today, the department has established scientific cooperation with the Institute of Genetics and Experimental Plant Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek Republic, the Institute of Microbiology of the Uzbek Federal University, the Institute of Plant Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek Republic, the Tashkent State Pedagogical University named after Nizomiy, in innovative cooperation of professors and teachers of the department with the Institute of Genetics and Experimental Plant Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek Republic, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Research Institute of Grain and Legumes of the Uzbek State Agricultural Institute, the Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics at the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek Republic, the Andijan City District and the Housing and Cultivation Cooperative of the region, the Research Institute of Cotton Breeding, Cultivation and Agrotechnology of Cultivation of the Andijan Scientific Experimental Station, in the farms “Matlubakhon Jasurbek”, “Oksuv Scientific and Experimental” of the Kurgantepa district, “Oltin yer Sakhovati” of the Andijan district, “Altynkul Zhannat Yogdusi” of the Altinkul district, Marjon Land, Ulugnorda Gayratbek Yerlari of the Ulugnor district, cooperation with them and positive results in the development of cotton selection and seed production were achieved, and business contracts were also concluded.
In terms of practical projects, the department's professors and teachers posted projects on the website of the Ministry of Innovations for discussion under the titles “Creation of new varieties of green manure and intermediate crops”, “Urgent extension of the harvest period of some foreign fruit bushes and creation of organic products from them”.
On international cooperation and scientific relations with foreign countries of the department, teachers of the department Professor D.S. Tuychieva and Associate Professor F.M. Tukhtabaeva visited Yildiz Technical University of Turkey and the Medical Institute of the Russian Peoples' Friendship University of the Russian Federation, with the aim of studying modern research methods and monitoring integration processes, exchanging experiences and improving qualifications.
The university's student dormitories and canteens, built in a modern style, are able to fully meet the needs of students, masters and doctoral researchers.
