The first census in Uzbekistan was conducted in 1897, covering demographic processes such as population, age and sex, ethnic composition, births and deaths. Later, censuses were conducted in Uzbekistan in 1926, 1939, 1959, 1970, 1979 and 1989. During the years of independence, no census was conducted in the country. The first census in the country after independence will be held in 2023 and will be held every 10 years. The legal basis for the population census is the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On Population Registration", adopted for the 16th time in 2020. This law is the first law on population registration adopted during the years of independence and regulates the relations in the field of population registration. Participation in the census is a social duty of a citizen.
